The Class 40 Maccaferri Futura Launched in Genoa: Luca Rosetti Ready for a High-Speed Season

The wait is over

In Genoa, the Class 40 Maccaferri Futura, the new ocean racing machine of 2024 Sailor of the Year Luca Rosetti, winner of the 2023 Mini Transat, has officially hit the water. Supported by Officine Maccaferri, a global leader in civil and environmental engineering, Rosetti is gearing up for a high-intensity season, with the Transat Café L’Or in late October, one of the most prestigious double-handed transatlantic races, as the main event.

The boat will also compete in other major Class 40 races, including the Rolex Fastnet Race (with Matteo Sericano, Edoardo Bianchi, Yael Poupon) and the Paprec 600 (with Yael Poupon).

Designed by Gianluca Guelfi and Fabio D’Angeli, the boat is the sixth Musa 40 Evolution, built by Sangiorgio Marine, renowned for crafting top-tier Class 40 vessels. With significant upgrades—like a keel moved aft and a forward mast position—Maccaferri Futura aims for the perfect balance of speed and handling, ready to perform in all sea and wind conditions.

Luca Rosetti comments:

“The launch of Maccaferri Futura is a proud milestone. It’s the result of months of hard work alongside an extraordinary team. This boat is balanced, fast, and ready to give its all.”

He adds:

“With this project, we also want to help push the Class 40 fleet toward a more sustainable future, promoting the use of innovative materials.”

Indeed, the boat’s non-structural components are made from flax fiber and thermoplastic resins in collaboration with Northern Light Composites. Stoppani supplied bio-based paints, North Sails provided high-performance sails, and Harken outfitted the deck with state-of-the-art hardware.

Maccaferri Futura also serves as a scientific platform: onboard equipment enables participatory ocean monitoring, coordinated by oceanographer Arianna Liconti. The project has recently been selected by the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters” for its contribution to protecting marine ecosystems and biodiversity, in line with the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030.

With Maccaferri Futura, Luca Rosetti and Officine Maccaferri are aiming for a standout season, combining sport, technology, and sustainability to propel Italian sailing into the future.
